I saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince today. It’s the third movie in a row I’ve seen on premiere day, and like almost all movies based on books, it was disappointing. But perhaps I’m not being fair. When considered relatively to other movies based on books, however, it was still disappointing. Oh and by the way, the rest of the post is spoiler filled.
To me at least, the biggest, most climatic part of the book was not the scene in the cave, which is apparently the only part of the movie that was done almost as carefully as the book, but the scene a while afterward during the fight after Dumbledore’s death. It was completely missing from the movie.
Even the cave scene wasn’t perfect. Dumbledore cheated on getting to the cave, making the security at Hogwarts seem almost laughable, the way he simply Apparated in and out of not only the castle grounds, but a tower, reasoning that as headmaster he had special privileges.
This obviously wasn’t the only omission. Dumbledore decided that Harry did not need to see any of the memories shown in the book other than his visit to the orphanage and the horcruxes memory, yet somehow the movie expected the viewer to understand when it focused on Tom Riddle’s ring for a noticeable amount of time.
So, to summarize, there was so much missing from the movie that I’m losing interest in writing this post. Watch the movie and find out for yourself what’s missing.
Edit: Yay! Even more well known blogs agree with me! Harry Potter and the Half-Hearted Ending [io9]
As for the title, I didn’t steal it! I posted first! (Really)
